DANVIC BRIONES
Conceptual Mixed Media
Vancouver, Canada

Briones is a Vancouver-based mixed-media artist and expressive arts therapist. His first artwork was an elephant, which he copied from his favourite uncle’s drawing. During the course of his Fine Arts studies at university, he was introduced to printmaking (collagraphy) and this became the cornerstone of his art.

Danvic’s art focuses on his memories from childhood, incorporating nature and cultures from Canada and the Philippines. He also focuses on the Vancouver landscape, portraits of people, animals, the depiction of events and everyday life, and almost always giving a glimpse of his Filipino heritage.

Danvic has participated in group exhibitions around BC and in other parts of Canada. Most recently, his works were shown in How Green is Your Muse at the Surrey Art Gallery, In My Own Voice at Il Museo Italian Cultural Centre in Vancouver, and Essence at the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa. Among his solo exhibitions include Lakbay, which was held at Richmond Public Library in 2014, and Emoticons which was staged at the San Diego Centre for the Moving Arts in the US in 2003.

His style and technique continuously evolve. He carves and engraves recycled wood to make a bas-relief and paints the resulting image with very subdued colours – the deepest red, mossy green, and maroon that borders on a darker hue. He highlights his subject using the brightest yellow and treats the canvas with varnish, letting the wood absorb the colours. Once the varnish has dried, he applies dark oil paint and gradually removes it, stroke by careful stroke, thus giving it a sepia look, and making the carved lines bolder. He then softens certain elements using a variety of brushes and techniques.

What makes Danvic’s masterpieces so captivating for collectors?

(1) He uses recycled wood as his canvas and carves and engraves his subjects on it

(2) He creates stunning details, colours and textures that invite viewers to explore and reflect on his themes

(3) He blends different materials and techniques such as oil, acrylic and varnish to produce playful and original artworks.

Where are you right now? and At Least One Goal (What is your artwork’s main message to this world)
Positivity and Hope in Humanity. Inspire one person at a time at any age to dream Big

What does your Artwork represent most of the time?
My subjects are mostly women and children. The femininity of a woman, the care of a mother and the playfulness of a child. All on a positive note, when people look at my painting I want to convey joy, hope or just put a smile on their face.

What are your primary mediums?
My paintings nowadays are mostly Acrylic on Canvas, but I started out with Oil and from time to time I still paint in Oil.

How have you noticed your art style change or develop over time?
When I found my style in 2016 that was the time I started to develop it, working around the same fluidity in my medium but tweaking it a bit, like for these series I would these theme, or same kinds of colors, process, etc.

Do you have an art background? Please share a bit about it.
I graduated as Interior Designer in De La Salle College of Saint Benilde and in Philippine School of Interior Design

What made you decide to choose the art career path?
“Looking back I always loved art,
it was “My Happy Place”,
a world of my own.
When I was young my mom bought me
those jumbo crayons and I draw everywhere.
I mean literally everywhere, even on our walls.
I’m blessed that my parents always
encouraged me to follow my passion
and after graduation at a university
I took up an art class and got hooked.
It started out as a hobby
but it was sheer bliss whenever I painted.
So it became my dream job.
In 2017 I decided that if I want to make art
as a living it’s now or never.
I focus and visualize myself as an artist creating magnificent art and inspiring everyone who’ll look at it.
I see this as my long term career.”

What and/or who is your inspiration? Or do you find inspiration externally? Is it someone else or something else?
“I have a long list of people who inspire me or I look up to and wish to follow their footsteps somehow.
What keeps me motivated is knowing that God gave me this talent and I owe it to Him.
I love to use this talent, improve it and hopefully make people see the beauty of life. “

What do you think are the key characteristics of your work that help you standout from the crowd?
First it is my Expression. We are unique in our own way. Every painting style has been done before we just got bits and pieces of every style and tailor made it on our own…. And then it becomes you. The fluidity in movement as if the painting has a life on its gives characters to my works. It usually depends on my music and mood what the emotion emits in my paintings and I guess the viewers sees it somehow.

What creative or technical process do you have or do you practice in working or making your masterpieces?
Well it depends, sometimes I can paint it in a day or a week but sometimes it takes longer like a month or even two months. Unless I haven’t envisioned it in my mind or see it in my dreams I can’t seem to finish it or be satisfied with it.
