What is Spoliarium:

SPOLIARIUM – The  historical painting by the Filipino artist Juan Luna submitted to the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1884 in Madrid, where it garnered the first gold medal. It is often misspelled as “Spolarium”. Also it is a Latin word referring to the basement of the Roman Colosseum where the fallen and dying gladiators are dumped and devoid of their worldly possessions.

TODAY, this is the digital platform for the Community of Artists and Art Lovers who help one another in empowering artists and connecting them to patrons worldwide through local art exhibits and an online marketplace.

The Problem and Solution:

PROBLEM: Lack of recognition and empowerment in the Art Industry in the Philippines and worldwide resulting in artists not reaching patrons.

After talking to a handful of artists in the Philippines, I was shocked to find some who admitted to me that they’ve considered or have attempted self harm and even suicide. Many felt devalued or worthless… — Then the little voice inside of me helped me to find a solution on how to bring attention and value to their craftsmanship.  — Herica Honcolada (click here to know more)

SOLUTION: SPOLIARIUM empowers artists and connects them to patrons through local art exhibits and an online marketplace.

About the 1st Art Exhibit

Spoliarium’s 1st Art Exhibit will initially focus on helping the Angono Artists (then nationwide and worldwide).

Their main issues are the following:

1. Cannot afford hosting their exhibits.

2. Do not have network or community to showcase the beauty of their work.

Note: Raeche and Love Marie (also known as Heart Evangelista) support this cause and Boy Mata (Angono Senior Artist) represents the Angono Community of Arts

“We’re here to join forces. We don’t want the Art Industry to die”. — Herica Honcolada

Working on acrylic has allowed Raeche, and perhaps more than that, fostered and deepened her love for the medium of art. It brought to life, after all, her own individual perspective to the depiction of her favorite themes – from still life objects as flowers, fascinating creatures like butterflies, to everyday people such as children and mothers.

By education, she graduated in 2003 from DLSU – College of Saint Benilde, and the Philippine School of Interior Design to major in BS Interior Design. It naturally led her into the field where she experienced working as a designer both in-house and as a freelancer, and even into garments production and merchandising. She even ended up working as an art facilitator for grade school children. – Raeche, has been in 34 solo and group art exhibitions nationwide.
