WHY DO MOST PEOPLE JUDGE SOMEONE’S GENEROSITY, ESPECIALLY A CELEBRITY?

December 29, 2019

When you see or hear an act of kindness especially if it is done by the celebrity does it inspire you to do the same, or give you a reason to judge that person?

There was a study done about how we judge other people’s generosity and why it matters —the study showed that when the alms-giving is done by someone of a higher social status (which includes famous celebrities for sure) people conclude that it is more egoistic than altruistic regardless of the desire for publicity. Also, volunteers who make noise about their charity are also considered less altruistic, regardless of the social status.

Furthermore I did some quick research out of curiosity about how and why most humans react negatively when they hear about a celebrity’s or rich man’s hospitality.

There are people who live a luxurious life, who may have beautiful and rich partners too. Envy causes us to wish or desire the same. But at times: this can all seem unattainable. One article I read said this: “When you cannot have something, you ultimately conclude it as bad. It is not wrong. There is a psychological reason behind this behavior, where our mind tries to protect our ego in order to survive the truth that something is out of our reach.”

So why do we judge people’s generosity, especially a celebrity? We’ve all done it… And I can only speculate as to why.

On a side note as my team and I continuously support and initiate community projects we frequently partner with great companies and professional individuals or celebrities with high credibility and authenticity and when we do, we’re proud to say that we usually ended up engaging with high-caliber professionals/individuals. One of the best experiences we had was when we reached out to a senior talent  manager of a well-known Artist Center in the Philippines to seek the support of one of their artists whom we thought would be a great fit. This manager responded to our emails and messages with care, promptness and professionalism. Moreover, the artist wholeheartedly supported our good cause without asking for any talent fees, press/exposure/spotlight and opted to be quiet about their good Samaritan acts to our cause event.

My Key takeaways? As we see philanthropic works everywhere we should be encouraged to do the same and never forget to say thanks to that person or group especially if it has a direct impact on you. Yes, we can make this world a better place one step at a time when we don’t judge or bash someone’s nobleness as we keep our focus on running our own race. Additionally, when we get an opportunity to work or collaborate with others, let’s unceasingly be a person with a high caliber. A high caliber professional possesses the following qualities: 1. Quickly consume and comprehend information, proposals/projects to promptly respond to it with care; 2. Great decision makers; 3. Credible and Authentic.
